BASL LIT® - CULTURE IN MOTION.
‘Get It Poppin, Keep It Lit, and Slam In Style!
Do It For The Culture!' ™
What Does "LIT" Means?
For BASL LIT®, the word “LIT” carries
two complementary meanings:
1. Literature
Literature is a powerful catalyst for creativity and self-expression. It encompasses poetry, stories, plays, and other written and signed works that inspire, educate, and preserve culture.
2. Lit
“Lit” is a contemporary expression used to describe something exciting, vibrant, unforgettable, and culturally relevant—something that’s fire, dope, cool, or awesome.
Together, these meanings represent the heart of BASL LIT®: honoring Black American Sign Language through literature while celebrating the energy, creativity, and innovation of Black Deaf culture.
Our Vision
Poetry is a form of literature that expresses thoughts, emotions, and stories through powerful language and artistic expression. Within Black American Sign Language (BASL), poetry comes alive through movement, rhythm, facial expression, storytelling, and visual performance.
BASL LIT® celebrates this rich tradition through poetry workshops, literature contests, slam performances, visual poetry, film festivals, and cultural initiatives that empower Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing signers who are writers, actors, artists, musicians, filmmakers, educators, and content creators.
Whether structured with rhythm and intentional patterns or performed as free verse, BASL poetry reflects the beauty, creativity, and lived experiences of our community.
